  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Tghu Verd -- Bleak and monochromatic : I've found Reynolds' recent novels up and down in tone and narrative inventiveness, and this one is a dip when compared to its Revelation Space siblings. I also found it inordinately bleak, with muted characters, one of whom has the now seemingly obligatory Reynolds trope of being a cast member who is other than what you are led to believe. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Ed Rybicki -- Flawed, but...gripping! : I do like Alastair Reynolds. I will pretty much buy anything he writes, even when the characters speak like old-timey pirates in the far future - and this new adventure in the Conjoiner-Demarchist universe is another great addition to the pantheon. • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Bryan G -- The bad guys are lurking around the corner, but are never fully unleashed : It’s exciting to return to the Revelation Space universe, to re-unite with some old characters, and to meet some new ones. The challenge here is that this story’s main role is to fill in a gap in the narrative between where one book left things, and where another book picked things up. “Inhibitor Phase” thus plays the role of filling in the gaps in the story, without adding any great new surprises or twists. What nevertheless got me reading was the hope for more battles with the Inhibitors, implacable robotic villains who make the Borg seem positively friendly. Unfortunately while the Inhibitors are always lurking around the corner in this book, they never do that much except chase after the good guys. The story is all set up for some thrilling scenes, but never quite delivers. Overall, a passable and decent read, but short of Reynolds’ best. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Richard Irwin -- Great Space Opera from one of today's best SF authors : Another very good entry in the Revelation Space series. It takes place at a time when there is very little left of humanity - they exist in only a few isolated pockets trying to avoid notice by the Inhibitors which have devastated mankind. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Syaronn -- Gripping : AR always keeps me riveted. He challenges my thought processes with his deep and varied science. I love everything he writes without reservation. I would actually love stand alone series that deeply delved into the creation of the hyperpigs and more about the Conjoiners. Most every other author I read pales in his shadow. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from J. Resue -- No space opera like Reynolds : Reading a new novel in the Revelation Space universe was like returning to a favorite vacation spot. Its all here, grand scale, memorable characters who are unlikeable but still charismatic, an eon-spanning story line. And maybe best of all, its clear this won't be the last installment in the series. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Michael -- Another good one : Dense, rich and plenty of fascinating characters. Set in the familiar universe of Revelation Space. Hard sci-fi as in there might be some realistic universe where this might happen and no hand waving away tough physics problems (ok except for maybe the Incantor). • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Peter Norman -- Alastair Reynolds never disappoints. : This takes me back to the first time I read Alastair Reynolds. Revelation Space as a real book. Massive. Hard well thought out science fiction. I have loved all his books since. This one gives some hope against the wolves. Yet it can stand on its own. to have red the other Revelation Space books. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Kid Ferrous -- A vast, epic yet very human SF saga : “Inhibitor Phase” is the latest novel by Alastair Reynolds and is a return to his ongoing Revelation Space universe. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 26, 2021 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from S. Maller -- Good on the grand scale, less so on the small scale : The trick with space opera is to meld the big sweep of time and distance with the character driven plot and individual points of view to make it a gripping story. I have read previous books and felt like I should know already some of the protagonists (Scorpio, Clavain) and it was written as if you would. However the elapsed time between publications was such that I didn't really feel the connection. Much of the time during the description of events I was just thinking "get on with it", where "it" was the big picture of humans vs inhibitors rather than individual battles. Also, in my opinion, the author is writing in tone/style as if hard-science SF but sneaking in too much pure fantasy. For example the Pattern Jugglers are just gods-coming-down-onto-the-stage, deus ex machina, to revive the dead and restore the lost. The interstellar drives are sub-FTL but do not seem to need reaction mass or fuel. There are stones worthy of a Marvel franchise film. I was hoping for better. • 4.0 out of 5 stars from C. S. Barlow -- A Welcome Return to the Darker Side of British SF : What is left of Humanity is under slow siege, terrified of attracting the notice of the ancient Inhibitor machines. However, Hourglass, an augmented human of considerable ability, has learned of a possible weapon against the so-far unbeatable Inhibitors... but she will, of course, require help in acquiring it. • 2.0 out of 5 stars from vortexreader -- Had to DNF this one : I read the other Revelation Space books as they were published and remember really enjoying them so I was looking forward to Inhibitor Phase. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 17, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Madmax -- Everything we've come to expect from an inventive writer : Continuation of the Revelation Space saga with humanity reduced to a few outcrops hiding in the dark. Follows Nevil Clavain...'s brother, with Scorpio/Pinky and some Conjoiners in their quest for a MacGuffin that will create a weapon that might save the universe. Hey, its classic Space Opera.
